Inspiring performances by host club abound at 2018 Winter Fest meet

Kendra Murray was named one of three club MVPs at Pickering Swim Club’s first home meet of 2018, thanks to podium finishes and personal bests in all seven events in which she competed.  On top of a first-place finish in the 200m backstroke and second-place finishes in the 100m and 200m individual medley (IM), Kendra swept the freestyle events for 10-year-old girls at Pickering’s 2018 Winter Fest, which took place January 19 to 21.  “Since the Barrie Aquafest meet in November, Kendra has been continuously knocking off time in all of her events,” says her coach Lisa Vitro, of the Red group. “But her freestyle events have been the most exciting to watch.”  In those four freestyle events at Winter Fest, Kendra improved her personal best times by nearly 21 seconds in total, and barely missed qualifying for Festivals in the 50m and 100m freestyle. However, the rising star can still look forward to A Champs this month, for which she has qualified for four events. “I look forward to great swims from her,” says Coach Lisa. “Kendra will definitely be one to watch in the future.”

Another of Pickering’s 2018 Winter Fest MVPs is Leif Bouwman, who medalled in all six of his events for 13-year-old boys. Leif won the 100m and 800m freestyle, 50m breaststroke and 200m IM, and was runner-up in the 50m freestyle and 200m breaststroke.

Hot off his seven-medal performance at the recent MAC Winter Invitational, Ean Carta, 11, achieved more great results at Winter Fest. Ean medalled in all of his races, including victories in the 50m and 100m freestyle, 200m IM and 200m breaststroke, and a third-place finish in the 800m freestyle. He set personal bests in four of the five events he contested, accumulating total time off of nearly 44 seconds.

The host club’s athletes won 47 gold, 46 silver and 50 bronze medals at the meet while cutting 3,010.8 seconds from their personal bests. Pickering’s leaders in time off were Samantha David (133.14 seconds), Samira D’Souza (122.60) and Marshal Munroe (93.64).

Pickering swimmers set new standards as Markham meet!

Two Pickering Swim Club records fell at the recent MAC Winter Invitational meet, capping off another successful competition for our athletes.  Anthony Toader smashed the former club record in the 50m backstroke for boys aged 15-16 – not just once, but twice. His times of 29.57 and 29.79 seconds (in the finals and preliminaries) each slashed about a second off the previous low achieved by Adam Gomba in May 2007.  Another club best came in the 1,500m freestyle for Boys 17 & Over. With a time of 17 minutes 53.28 seconds, Nader Tannir edged out Michael Storto’s nearly 11-year-old time of 17:54.17.

Adding to the excitement was the superlative performance of Ean Carta, who reached the podium in all eight of his events. The Boys 11 & Under competitor won Gold in the 50m and 100m butterfly, 200m individual medley (IM) and 200m breaststroke; Silver in the 50m and 100m freestyle and the 50m breaststroke; and Bronze in the 200m freestyle. Ean also finished second among Pickering swimmers in time off their personal bests, with a total of 97.92 seconds. Benji Sykes led the team with a 114.86-second reduction, and David Harvie rounded out the top three at 78.12 seconds.

All told, Pickering’s 42 participants cut 985.05 seconds off their personal bests at the meet, which was not only the club’s first meet after the Christmas break, but held in a 50-metre pool. “It is always a challenge to transition from short course to long course,” said Anne Ottenbrite Muylaert, Pickering Swim Club’s head coach. “Pickering did a great job.”
