Top 5 Finish for Pickering at AA Champs

Pickering Swim Club’s 7 gold medals earned the club 5th place at the 2018 Ontario Spring AA Championships, and two of its swimmers came home with High Point honours.

Racing at the Markham Pan Am pool in Unionville, Ont., Pickering’s 10 qualifying swimmers won a total of 12 medals, including 4 silver and 1 bronze. Fully 53 clubs from across the province competed in the meet, held March 8-11.

Nader Tannir led the charge by dominating the freestyle events in his age group (Boys 17). Nader finished 1st in all four events he contested, including the 200m (2 minutes, 2.06 seconds), 400m (4:21.58), 800m (9:06.72) and 1,500m (17:40.16). His performance also earned the High Point prize for Boys 17 and over.

Sonja Ross was the second of Pickering’s High Point winners (Girls 15 and Over), taking gold in three of her four events: the 200m freestyle (2:17.53), 400m freestyle (4:47.84) and 800m freestyle (9:52.02).

Pickering’s other individual medalists at the included Ben Fera (Boys 15) with silver in the 200m breaststroke and bronze in the 100m breaststroke; and Viktor Vragovic (Boys 14) with silver in the 100m butterfly. Viktor topped all Pickering athletes with 18.64 seconds off his personal bests, comprising the lion’s share of the club’s 32.35 seconds off.

The club rounded out its medal count in men’s relay. The team of Brandon Tapp, Ben Fera, Daniel Early and Nader Tannir earned silver in the 4 x 50m freestyle (1:48.73), and Adam Malesich, Ben Fera, Viktor Vragovic and Nader Tannir took another silver in the 4 x 100m medley (4:30.55).

Pickering swimmer cracks Top 10 at provincial championships

Anthony Toader earned both of Pickering Swim Club’s top-10 finishes at the 2018 Ontario Spring Provincial Championships, held March 1-4 at the Etobicoke Olympium.  Anthony placed 8th in the 100m freestyle for Boys aged 15 with his time of 56.96 seconds, and 9th in the 100m backstroke (1:03.45).

Among the nine Pickering swimmers who qualified for the long-course meet, Boys 13 swimmer Leif Bouwman cut the most from his personal bests, with a total drop of 6.51 seconds. Next were brothers Sam Fera (Boys 13, 5.31) and Ben Fera (Boys 15, 2.71).

Pickering’s other qualifiers were Daniel Early (Boys 16), Aiden Malesich (Boys 16), Sonja Ross (Girls 15), Jenna Stokes (Girls 17) and Nadir Tanner (Boys 17).

Sykes sweeps Newmarket meet!

An awe-inspiring performance by Benji Sykes led Pickering Swim Club athletes to a 50-medal haul at the 2018 Steve Kingston Memorial Meet in Newmarket, Ont.  Benji topped the podium in all six of the events he started, cutting 9.35 seconds from his personal bests. The Boys 12 swimmer took gold in the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle, 100m breaststroke and the 200m and 400m individual medleys.  Benji was one of three Pickering athletes to win six medals.

Graydon Hughes topped the podium in the 100m and 200m butterfly events, plus the 800m freestyle, for 12-year-old boys. He added silver in the 100m and 200m freestyle, and bronze in the 400m IM. In those six events combined, he dropped 47.62 seconds from his times.

Ean Carta dropped 67.3 seconds from his best times en route to a six-medal finish of his own. The Boys 11 swimmer won gold in the 200m freestyle and individual medley events, and silver in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke and the 400m freestyle.

Two Pickering athletes won five medals each at the Steve Kingston meet, which took place on a 25m course at Newmarket’s Magna Centre. Dante Reid (Boys 11) earned four gold (50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke; 50m butterfly) and one bronze (200m IM). David Harvie (Boys 12) grabbed two silvers (100m backstroke, 800m freestyle) and three bronze (50m, 100m and 200m freestyle).

All told, Pickering’s athletes cut 2,228.1 seconds from their personal bests, led by the 139.68-second drop of Madeline Malesich (Girls 14), 92.54 seconds from Marshall Munroe (Boys 13) and 90.22 seconds from Samantha Kerr (Girls 14).
